Macbook Pro-Modbook

Modbook introduces the Modbook Pro

Who remembers the Modbook? We looked at an early iteration back in 2008, and today the company has introduced the Modbook Pro. It is a tablet, but the Modbook Pro does not run iOS. It's essentially the hardware of a 13" MacBook Pro inside a tablet case with a touch screen, running OS X. The company notes that the screen uses a Wacom digitizer for "512 levels of pen pressure sensitivity," which it claims is more than any other tablet. As for the screen itself (1280 x 800 pixel resolution), the Modbook says it's "etched" for a paper-like feel. So what's inside this beast? You'll find a 2.5GHz dual core Intel i5 processor ( 2.9GHz dual core i7), up to 16GB of RAM, a 2.5-inch SATA drive (up to 1TB HDD or up to 960GB SSD), DVD burner, an Intel HD Graphics 4000 chipset, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. On the outside you'll find a Gigabit Ethernet port, one FireWire 800 port, one USB 3.0 port, one Thunderbolt port, one SDXC card slot and one audio line in/out. The device ships with a digitizer pen, which can be tucked away inside a magnetic "pen garage" when not in use. The company hopes to ship the Modbook Pro in "fall of 2012," and has promised sales info within the next few weeks.Modbook introduces the Modbook Pro originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 12:00:00 EST. Microsoft Surface-Mobile Computing-Tablet

Will The Microsoft Surface Tablet Redefine Mobile Computing?

Microsoft just took the wraps off the all new Microsoft Surface. Even though the name is familiar this is an entirely new product. Simply put, the Surface is a Windows 8 tablet. But it seems so much more. In fact, perhaps I'm still a little drunk on Microsoft Kool-Aid, but the Surface seems like the next generation of mobile computing. While Surface might not kill the iPad, it might revive Microsoft. To be clear, the Surface is Microsoft's hardware. This is a not a Dell or HP tablet running Microsoft's software. Microsoft clearly designed this tablet to best showcase Windows 8. The tablet itself seems fantastic. Compared to the iPad, it's a bit utilitarian with hard lines, full size I/O ports, and heat vents. But it also seems like a serious tablet rather than a plaything. read more..

True Alternative-Notion Ink

Notion Ink Scraps High-Resolution Screen For Next Tablet

We've always been interested in the Notion Ink project, which has always striven to be a true alternative to both the iPad and Android masses. Last time, it was through both a Pixel Qi screen and an interesting custom interface, but delays and yield problems more or less buried it and competitors piled up.The sequel to Notion Ink's Adam was originally going to have a 10" screen running at 1920x1200. A post on the company's development blog has admitted that this is not likely to happen. read more..

Yahoo! Accuses Facebook-Forrester Research-Social Networking-California Court-Android Tablet

Forrester: No Android Tablet Has More Than 5% Share vs iPad. How Does Amazon’s Kindle Fire Compare?

On the eve of what is very likely to be the launch of a new iPad from Apple comes some new analysis from Forrester Research on the current competitive landscape -- or lack thereof, as the case seems to be.In short: despite the rush of tablets that have come out in the past year, many built on Google's Android OS, Apple has managed to continue to run away with the competition, and how has 73 percent of the tablet market. No Android tablet maker, it notes, has more than a five percent share against it.There is a caveat to Forrester's research, however. read more..

Overwhelming Demand-Tablet Market-Android-Apple-Ipad

IDC: Apple’s iPad Rules Tablet Sales Today But Android Makers Will Overtake It By 2016

With news of Apple's new iPad selling out its first run due to overwhelming demand, 2012 is off to a galloping start for the tablet market; and because of that IDC is upping its forecasts for how many tablets will be shipped this year. The analysts predict that the number will top 106.1 million units, up from their previous forecast of 87.7 million units, due in part to strong demand for that new iPad, but also a number of other devices at a range of price points.Indeed, while Apple will continue to be the single biggest tablet maker on the market, Android, collectively, will continue to hold its own against it, with some notable devices like the Amazon Kindle Fire doing particularly well. But it will not be until 2016 -- four years from now -- that IDC thinks that Android shipments will outnumber those of iOS. read more..

Changewave Research-Corporate Buyers-Tablets-Ipads

Survey: iPads the choice of 84% of companies buying tablets

Apple's going to need to keep those supplier factories in China running 24/7 just to meet the demand from corporate buyers. A new ChangeWave Research survey of 1,604 corporate buyers shows that not only are about one in five companies planning on purchasing tablets for employees, but of those companies a whopping 84 percent say that they plan to purchase iPads. That last number is up seven percent from the previous survey, which was done in November of 2011. With the Apple number going up, logically the share for other manufacturers will be declining. ChangeWave's numbers show that the percentage of companies planning to purchase tablets made by Apple arch-rival Samsung is a distant 8 percent. The results are even worse for companies like Lenovo and Motorola, which are the choice of only 2 percent of respondents respectively. ChangeWave also asked the corporate buyers which wireless data carrier they planned to use for the new tablets. The results were split nearly 50-50, with 30 percent of respondents hitching their tablets to the AT&T wagon and 29 percent following the Verizon path. Only 4 percent said they'd choose Sprint -- which doesn't currently carry the iPad -- and 11 percent said they'd forego a wireless plan. The rest of the respondents? They really weren't sure.
