The developer doesn't have any special information about the next iPhone, but is sharing the video as an intellectual exercise to show how games could look on the larger screen.

Windows Malware Stows a Ride in iOS App Store App [iOS Blog]

CNET reports on the discovery of Windows malware embedded within an iPhone application available through the App Store. But rather than a directed attack at Windows users, the malware appears to have been accidentally included from an infected developer's system. The malware is also relatively old and easily detected by most antivirus software for Windows once the App Store package has been unwrapped.
The malware was first discovered by a user posting in the Apple support forums who noted that a download of Instaquotes-Quotes Cards For Instagram from developer Ilyas Hassani triggered warnings from the ClamXav antivirus software for Mac. While the Windows malware obviously could not harm the user's OS X installation, it was flagged as an infected file posing a danger to Windows systems. After learning about the discovery, CNET performed additional testing on the download to confirm that it was not a false positive.Since the downloaded .ipa file is a package, these executables could be extracted using the package manager Pacifist, and then more accurately scanned. Afterward, other malware programs like Sophos that initially missed detecting the malware instantly picked it up and described it as "Mal/CoiDung-A," a worm written in visual basic that installs files within the Windows system directory and then modifies the Windows registry to execute the malware when the system is restarted.
Copying the malware to a Windows virtual machine running the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials resulted in the malware being immediately detected and removed from the system.It is unclear exactly how or why the malware came to be included in the App Store package, but it seems almost certain to have been an accidental inclusion. As delivered inside the application package, it appears to pose no harm to Windows users, who would have to decompress the package and manually run the infected file in order to expose themselves to the malware.
The infected application debuted in the App Store on July 19 and is currently still available for download after a temporary price drop from $0.99 to free over the weekend. read more..

Reading Rainbow App Brings Books to a New Generation [iOS Blog]

A generation of children grew up learning to love reading by watching LeVar Burton's PBS show Reading Rainbow. The show was cancelled in 2009 after a 26-year run, but has been resurrected as a new iPad app.
Engadget attended the public launch of the app, and has video of Burton's emotional introduction of the app, as well as some hands-on reviews.
Burton told us that he was genuinely surprised with the public outcry that followed the show's cancellation. Kids have grown up with it for more than a quarter-century, and as such, there are some fairly strong emotional bonds at play here. According to Burton, maintaining the elements that made the show so magical was the most difficult aspect of the 18 months the team invested in the creation of the app. And, naturally, one reporter in attendance wanted to know what happened to the book report feature that played heavily in the TV show. Burton assured him that it's coming.
The app's interface is built around a series of floating islands, each based on a different genre. At present, the islands include "My Friends and Family," "Animal Kingdom," "Genius Academy" (science and math) and "Action Adventures & Magic Tales." More subject islands will be added as the app continues to be built out. Burton told us that the team was looking to move away from the more traditional e-book shelf format, into something that made reading "more of an adventure," much like the original program.
New books are available via a subscription service for $9.99/month, or $29.99 for a six-month subscription. Reading Rainbow's page on the App Store has additional details for exactly how the subscription system works.

Time Warner Cable CEO Hasn't Heard of Apple's AirPlay [iOS Blog]

AirPlay is a technology that seamlessly moves audio and video from device to device in the Apple ecosystem. It's built into the iPhone, iPad, and -- most importantly -- the Apple TV set-top box. Among other things, AirPlay can be used to send video from iPhone apps like YouTube, MLB.tv, or WatchESPN to the AppleTV.
Apple hasn't advertised AirPlay as strongly as some other features, like the iPhone 4S's Siri, though it did run a television ad after the iPhone 4 was introduced in 2011. That said, it's surprising that Glenn A. Britt, the chief executive of Time Warner Cable said he hadn't heard of the service, according to the New York Times.
"I’m not sure I know what AirPlay is," he said, though he noted that he was an enthusiastic Apple customer. "Today we want to be on every screen. Today it’s a little bit clunky to get programming from the Internet onto the TV — not so hard to get it on your iPad. What’s hard is the plumbing, what wires do you connect, what device do you use. So the current Apple TV, the little thing, the hockey puck, really doesn’t do anything to help enable you to get Internet material on your TV."
Ironically, Apple has solved Britt's problem -- though he wasn't aware of it -- but the company is not pushing AirPlay too strongly upon its users, nor the media companies. The Apple TV natively supports only a handful of third party services like streaming MLB, NHL, and NBA games, as well as Netflix.
However, AirPlay support has allowed many apps to send "programming from the Internet onto the TV", just as Britt wants, and could foreshadow the market segment a rumored Apple television set would fill. read more..

The Pebble wristwatch has tallied up a Kickstarter-record breaking $8 million in pledges and now has a big endorsement with the announcement of its first third-party app integration.
Popular fitness app RunKeeper has announced that its users will be able to see in-activity fitness data, start and stop timing and more on the Pebble watch when it launches this fall.
Well, when Pebble approached us about integrating with RunKeeper, we loved the idea. We know that many of you are always looking for ways to make your fitness tracking easier, and with Pebble integration, you won’t ever have to pull the phone out of your pocket or armband – you can just see and do everything you need right from your watch (which connects with the phone via bluetooth). Hack Allows Developers to Start Testing iPad Retina Display in iOS Simulator [iOS Blog]

With a Retina iPad 3 expected just next week, one developer has created a small utility that allows the iPad simulator to run in 2X mode. The utility is available from Ryan Petrich.
In order to run it on the latest version of Xcode, you will need to symlink /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer to /Developer and /Developer4.
Meanwhile, stroughtonsmith shows how his app SameGame looks in the Retina iPad emulator running on his 27" iMac:

Apple is widely expected to release a Retina-enabled iPad 3 next week at their media event. If rumors are to believed, the iPad 3 should be available within a week or so of the announcement. That would leave developers little time to Retina-ize their current iPad apps if they wait until the day of the announcement. read more..

Apple Working on New Device with 5-Inch Retina Display for 2013? [iOS Blog]

Japanese blog Macotakara today offers a brief report claiming that Apple is working on a new product for release in 2013 that will carry a 5-inch Retina-quality display.The product which has 5-inch Retina Display is expected to be released in 2013, and resolution of this LCD will be 1,600 x 960 pixel (800 x 480 by legacy majour) or 1,280 x 960 pixel (640 x 480).Apple has been rumored to be developing a so-called "iPad mini" carrying a 7.85-inch display carrying the same 1024x768 non-Retina resolution of the original iPad and iPad 2. Despite the smaller physical size of the iPad mini compared to the iPad, calculations suggest that the screen size would meet Apple's app design guidelines to keep interface elements of existing iPad applications at an acceptable physical size from a usability perspective.
A device carrying a 5-inch display at either 1600x960 or 1280x960 would introduce additional complications for developers, presuming that it would be an iOS device designed to run App Store apps. That resolution would not allow for easy scaling of existing iPhone/iPod touch or iPad apps to fit the new device's display, requiring developers to target yet another set of screen dimensions with their apps.
Macotakara has had a mixed track record in the past, and when combined the apparent difficulties for app developers, we hesitate to put much faith in these claims at this time. read more..

Shipping Estimates for New Apple TV Slip to 1-2 Weeks [iOS Blog]

Shipping estimates for the new 1080p Apple TV have already slipped to 1-2 weeks in Apple's U.S. online store, likely indicating that the company has run through its launch stock of the set-top box. The new Apple TV debuted earlier today with a shipping date of "Delivers on March 16", but Apple is no longer promising delivery on that date. Online stores for nearly every other country in which Apple offers the Apple TV are currently showing shipping (not delivery) windows of March 16-19.
Supplies of the new iPad appear to be holding up in most locations, with all models in the United States and a number of other countries still showing delivery dates of March 16. Apple's online store in Hong Kong is, however, currently showing the new iPad as unavailable for pre-ordering. Some countries are showing somewhat broader estimates than seen in the U.S. and other markets, with delivery in Australia and Singapore expected in the window of March 16-22, Switzerland showing a window of March 16-21, and Canada offering an estimate of March 16-20. read more..
